Habane extension drainage improvement works in progress

Drainage improvement works are currently underway at Habane Extension High Density Suburb in Ward 17 of Umzingwane District as part of remedial measures aimed at addressing persistent storm water management challenges. The project involves the construction and upgrading of drainage infrastructure to facilitate efficient water conveyance, minimise soil erosion, and reduce the risk of flooding and road washaways. To date, 0.3 kilometres of stone-pitched drain has been completed, representing significant progress in improving the suburb's drainage network.

Concurrently, road gravelling works are being implemented alongside the drainage improvements as part of the remedial interventions. The gravelling of roads is enhancing trafficability by improving road surface conditions, ensuring safer and more reliable access for residents, particularly during the rainy season when roads are often rendered impassable due to excessive runoff and erosion.

The drainage improvement programme is being implemented in phases and will gradually extend to other suburbs, including Fernspruit, Emlanjeni, and other residential areas within the district. Priority is being accorded to areas most prone to flooding, soil erosion, and road washaways to maximise the impact of the interventions and safeguard critical infrastructure.

The initiative demonstrates the Council's commitment to providing sustainable, efficient, and effective engineering solutions that enhance resilience, improve service delivery, and contribute to the socio-economic development of Umzingwane District.
