The ongoing road rehabilitation programme in Esigodini continues to reshape the district’s transport network, enhancing mobility, improving road safety, and supporting socio-economic development. The works, which include road reshaping, drainage rehabilitation, gravelling where necessary, and routine maintenance, are aimed at ensuring reliable all-weather access for communities and economic activities.

All interventions are being implemented under Phase 1, which focuses on priority areas requiring urgent attention to restore and stabilise road infrastructure.

Significant progress has been recorded in Emlanjeni High Density and Fernspruit Medium Density, where rehabilitation works are at an advanced stage. In Emlanjeni High Density, internal road rehabilitation is approximately 90% complete, marking a key milestone under Phase 1. These works have improved mobility within the suburb and strengthened access to essential services such as schools, clinics, and business centres.

In Fernspruit Medium Density, rehabilitation works have progressed steadily, resulting in improved road conditions and more reliable access throughout the year. This has enhanced connectivity within the suburb and to surrounding service centres.

At the same time, Habane Extension suburb is benefiting from ongoing Phase 1 interventions, where gravelling of a targeted 1.5km road network is underway, with dumping of imported material over than 1.3km of road achieved, significantly improving surface conditions and accessibility.

These works are being complemented by drainage improvement interventions aimed at addressing flooding and road washaways during the rainy season. This integrated approach ensures improved durability and long-term performance of the rehabilitated road network.

Looking ahead, Phase 2 is set to commence in the short to medium term, with planned works targeting Ncema Park, Greenland, and Emlanjeni Medium Density. These areas have been prioritised based on infrastructure needs, accessibility challenges, and service delivery requirements, and will build on the progress achieved under Phase 1.

Through this phased programme, the Council remains committed to delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance connectivity, support local economic activity, and improve the quality of life for residents across Umzingwane District.
